Barbarians 71 - Winnipeg North End Highlanders 17
After almost a month of no league play due to a defaulted game against the Saracens, the August long weekend and time off for the Rugby Canada National Championships, the Brandon Barbarians completely overwhelmed the depleted North End Highlanders 71-17. Before the game, the Barbs had to resolve a critical problem. Where's the game. The solution was found, not at the Highlanders' home pitch at Stanley Knowles School, but rather at Sisler High School. That's another story (but you get it all HERE).
At game time, the Highlanders had only 12 players. The referee requested that the Barbs play with a 12 man side to make things a little more even. With the usual high available player count, the Barbs also had more-or-less unlimited substitution opportunities. Sean Common accounted for 18 of the 71 point total with two trys and four converts. Nathan Peto also made two trys. Mason Broadfoot scored a try and two converts (Mason could have made three converts, but the ball flew awry and hit the goal post !?!). Scoring single trys were Andrew Ritchie, Shane Morgan, Brent Gallant, Kevin Teneycke and Jim Ritchie. Rounding out the score was Sean Erickson with a single try. Incidentally, 71 points is not a recent current game record. Back in May, 2004, in a rain-soaked game at CGRP, the Barbs defeated the Wanderers 78-5.
The weekend Road Trip continues Sunday with a drive up to Dauphin for a game against the Mavericks. Sunday is also, thanks to former Barb player, Leon Letkeman, DISH-DASH day.
Barbs next home game is SUNDAY, September 20 against the Wombats.
