Saturday, August 5, was a great day for rugby in Brandon as the 2006 Edition of the Brandon Barbarians met the Barbs' Old Boys and Legends in a game to celebrate the Barbs' 25th Anniversary.
The sun was warm, the wind was refreshing, the audience, one of the largest ever at CGRP, was captivated as the 2006 Barbs defeated the Barbs OB&Ls 19-12.
Sean Common made two trys and two converts for 14 points and Sean Erickson scored a try for five. As though he had never become just a legend, Scott McMullan made two trys for ten points. Wayne Davis made one conversion.
The tightly disciplined 2006 Barbs were not quite prepared to play a devil-may-care-which-way-is-the-wind-blowing-today side. The Legends displayed many of tricks of their trade that had made them famous. Their unorthodox play and substitution which has come about as a result of perhaps too much time spent in retirement threw the 2006 side into a frenzy. Although confused initially, the 2006'ers caught on and eventually beat the OBs at their own game. The referee, definitely a legend in his own time, made some outstanding calls and, as anticipated, some that weren't.
All in all, an enjoyable 80 minutes or so....
