RUGBY MANITOBA SENIOR MEN DIVISION I

Saturday, August 11, Canada Games Rugby Park

Brandon Barbarians 22  -  Winnipeg Assassins 10

In their first match-up in June, the Barbs and the Assassins played rather evenly, with the Assassins coming out on top. The same could be said about this game, although this time the Barbs walked away the winner. The Barbs' win came about with some fine runs and hard work, and by taking advantage of some Assassins miscues. The Assassin scores were much the same.

Brian Yon made three trys, with an awesome run of his own in the first half and behind a great run by Nathan Peto in the second. Brent Gallant also had impressive run which led to his try. Shane Morgan made the single conversion for the Barbs.

The youthful innocence of the Barbs' 2007 in Division I play is rapidly fading away. Scott Fowel and Nathan Peto are becoming a force for the opposition to deal with. Todd Steeden, filling in for Owen Hagen (away on holidays) certainly made his presence felt on the front line. The strong work in the backfield by the double Andrews, Halliday and Ritchie, Graham Wiebe, Mason Broadfoot and Shane Morgan cannot been ignored either.

It was also very obvious that the geezers*, namely Scott McMullan, Rob Smith, Kevin Teneycke and Brian Yon were still up to their old tricks and showing them to the young 'uns.

With this win, the Barbs even the season to four wins and four losses. They have strengthened their hold on fourth place in Division I.

The Barbs travel to Sturgeon for a game against the Rowdies next Saturday at 3pm.

* geezer (defn) - A Barbarian too young to be called "An Old Boy," and too old to be called "youthful."

The Barbs' First Ever Wheezer-Geezer Winner

Every once-in-a-while, those in the cheap seats on the West Berm find themselves completely and totally impressed with an individual performance or play down on the field. This particular event took place at about half-way through the first half. Brian Yon had caught a pass on the Barbs' side on the pitch. "Nice catch, Yonner," someone said. Even the photographer caught the beginning of the run, to which someone added, "Go Yon." To everyone's amazement up there, Yon kept going and going and going. The photographer caught up the play as Yon made the try. Someone knowledgeable admitted, "Pretty good for a guy who hasn't played in two months. He's not even in playing shape. No wonder he's taking his time getting up.  He's tuckered out."

Below is the series of five photos taken during this effort. The sixth is in the main photo board. Unfortunately, Yonner ran from north to south, or, as far as the photographer is concerned, from right to left. So to see the sequence in order, start at the right and move to the left.

"Look at how he's catching his breath."

"Look at how he's wheezing."

Hence, the "Wheezer Geezer" Award.
