RUGBY MANITOBA SENIOR MEN DIVISION I Saturday, July 14, Maple Grove U of M Wombats 34 - Brandon Barbarians 29 The Barbs scored a try in the first two minutes and surprised themselves, or perhaps, just concluded that they were definitely a real Division I team. The win against the Sturgeon Rowdies last week no doubt served as an inspiration as the Barbs matched the Wombats try for try. The score at the half: Wombats 21 Barbs 15. That six point separation remained at game's end. Scoring for the Barbs was led by Shane Morgan with a try and two conversions. Other trys were scored by Jim Ritchie, Owen Hagen, Nathan Peto and rookie Tristan Snider. Tristan is a 2007 graduate of the Vincent Massey Vikings rugby program. The outstanding play of such relative newcomers as Mike Bok, Scott Fowel, Andrew Halliday and Aaron Kaluzniak was matched by the usual strong performances from veterans Troy Hengen, Shane Morgan and Nathan Peto. (It is hard to call Hengen, Morgan and Peto veterans, but.....) Their confidence, pride and love of the game have strongly and positively influenced a very young team. Captain Tom Robson showed his grit and spunk again yesterday with an inspiring run from just outside the Barbs' 22 to inside the Wombats' 22 leaving a wobbling line of strewn Wombat bodies along the way. And, Owen Hagen was Owen Hagen.... The final score indicates otherwise, but the Brandon Barbarians came away a winning team. The Barbs play at home next Sunday, July 22, 1pm against the Saracens.
