RUGBY MANITOBA SENIOR MEN DIVISION I Saturday, September 22,, Maple Grove Rugby Park Semi-Final Winnipeg Wanderers 17 Brandon Barbarians 10 And that was that. But what a great year for the Barbs in their first season in Division One. Any season that starts off with three straight loses makes one wonder what was going on. Maybe there was no reason for the Barbs to be in the First Division at all. Second Division was, perhaps, for the Barbs, where it was at. Three Div II championships plus the Rugby Manitoba Cup in the previous four years said something, didn't it? Was anyone really listening? The Barbarians team that played in June certainly didn't pay attention. And then the collective memories of the players clicked with a vistory over the Rowdies, a team new to Div I itself, A win made the Barbs feel good about themselves. Though the Barbs lost to the Wombats in the next game, I said at the time, "... the Brandon Barbarians came away a winning team." (Click HERE to review that game's comments.) I have been around this team for too long not to notice an important and a positive change in attitude. Seven solid wins later put the Barbs into third place in the standings and into the semi-final game played yesterday. Not even I could have dreamed that scenario. The semi-final game could have gone either way. Scott McMullan and Nathan Peto scored the trys for the Barbs and someone-or-other scored the three trys for the Wanderers and, for good measure, someone kicked a convert. And that was that. The Barbarians had convinced everyone and most importantly themselves that they really did belong in Division I. Congratulations, Barbs. Thanks for the chance to share all the memories of 2007.
